Dont forget to clean your Salt & Pepper Shakers!

25 October 2011

A hot spot for bacteria that most of us forget to clean with our cleaning supplies.

Salt and Pepper shakers along with other table condiments are highlighted as high hand contact points responsible for harbouring many bacterias and transferring bugs responsible for many common coughs and colds.

Salt & Pepper Shaker

Research conducted by the University of Virginia highlighted the problem when they asked 30 adults, all of whom had started showing signs of a cold - to list all the items and surfaces in their homes, that they had touched during the previous 18 hours.  The items were then tested by the researchers for the cold virus.  41% of the surfaces tested positive  and in the case of the salt and pepper shakers - every one tested  positive for cold viruses.

The shakers are a haven for bacteria as they have regular contact and usually food stuffs from peoples fingers will be deposited providing bio nutrients for bacteria to thrive upon.  Also as far as cleaning is concerned we do seem to be forgetting to clean our salt and pepper shakers with a suitable bactericidal cleaning product.

Bactericidal cleaning supplies in the kitchen are good for cutting through grease, grime and food debris leaving surfaces clean and sanitised.  Using a suitable cleaner/sanitiser such as our Evaporate or Concentrated Bactericidal cleaner will enable the user to quickly remove dirt and debris and sanitise at the same time, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and cutting back on the amount of colds that we get especially in the winter months.

Just wiping over our condiments on a weekly basis will significantly reduce the bacteria count.

Whilst carrying out the sanitising consider any other potential hotspots and give them a wipe over too for example;

  • Light switches - do not wet use a damp cloth!
  • Cupboard handles
  • Refrigerator
  • Microwave especially the door handle and keypad
